Lesotho Ministry of Education Transitioning to DHIS2-Ed
Building on lessons learned from implementations in 12 countries, Lesotho takes a major step toward sustainable, locally owned education data systems by transitioning its EMIS to DHIS2-Ed.
Lesotho has joined the growing network of countries adopting DHIS2 for Education (DHIS2-Ed), marking another milestone in the global movement toward stronger and more responsive education management information systems (EMIS). With support from UNICEF and the HISP network, the Ministry of Education and Training will transition its national EMIS to DHIS2-Ed — strengthening data management, enabling near real-time insights, and improving evidence-based decision-making across schools nationwide.
A Strategic Vision for Data-Driven Education
The Ministry of Education and Training has placed data and evidence at the center of its education reform agenda. Through the National Education Strategic Sector Plan and the GPE Country Compact, Lesotho has prioritized the modernization of its information systems as a key driver of improved learning outcomes.
By adopting DHIS2-Ed, Lesotho is investing in sustainable, locally owned systems that enhance the country’s ability to monitor progress, identify gaps, and respond quickly to emerging needs. This transition builds on a decade of lessons from DHIS2-Ed implementations in over a dozen countries and connects Lesotho to a global community of practice dedicated to advancing education through better data.
A Collaborative Effort
The transition to DHIS2-Ed is made possible through close collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Training, UNICEF, and the global HISP network, which includes local partners who will play a key role in adapting and sustaining the system. Together, these partners are working to ensure that Lesotho’s education data systems are not only modernized, but also responsive to the country’s unique context, strengthening the foundation for data-driven policies and better outcomes for learners across the kingdom.
